Acid cleaning (using iron phosphate acid solutions and zirconium) dissolves and removes rust, scale, mineral deposits, and stubborn oxidation that basic washing or degreasing can’t fully eliminate. By chemically etching the metal surface, acid cleaning creates a slightly roughened, clean profile. This helps the powder coating bond more securely, reducing the risk of peeling or flaking later. A properly acid-cleaned surface ensures that the powder coat cures evenly and consistently, improving durability, corrosion resistance, and the overall lifespan of the coating. Acid cleaning is usually used after degreasing and sometimes before or after media blasting, depending on the condition of the metal. It’s especially helpful for heavily rusted or aged parts.
